History

Our house in Fira Santorini belongs to our family since 1928. Part of it was build around 1750 by the French noble family called Alby. As a mater of fact, one of the mountainside carved homes, which is part of the house, opened its gate to the first modern-Greek theater in 1830, after the foundation of the modern-Greek nation.

Its architectural history follows tradition from the very first stone put in this house. The first construction was the big mountainside carved home mentioned before and a second one smaller followed, built in the same level. Finally around 1870 a stone house was built, next to the mountainside carved ones, but in a higher level of about 5 meters. The stone house has 6 meters high crossed domed ceiling, demonstrating the state of art sense of the people living there. It was necessary back then, as well as now, the huge water container under the house, which collects rainwater from the terrace. There is another water container even bigger under the big mountainside carved home, which collects rainwater from the yard.
